To avoid the heat, we saw most of the gracious Muslim mosques and dargahs (tomb complexes) in the early hours of the morning or in the late afternoon twilight. The marble takes on a pink glow in the early morning and the grounds of the mosques are full of birds, seated congregations of silent men, proud families of one or two men, with five or six women and a dozen children. Like the Japanese, the wealthier Indian families who are also tourists to these sites are very anxious to take our photograph and have us take their photograph, with our camera. Cameras are too expensive for these middle class families. Everyone wants to practice their English and anyone with a little English wants to be your guide.
